Gun Free Zones do not protect people; people protect people

Mall of America

We have another example of how Gun Control and Gun Free Zones do not protect people with the Mall of America shooting. Here is what we know so far:

The Mall of America under Minnesota state law is a gun free zone. The Mall of America posts these signs:

At least 6 gang members were carrying firearms despite the law and involved in shooting and killing a 19-year old. 5 have been arrested so far. 2 are 18 years old and 3 are 17 years old. Minnesota does not issue CCW permits to anybody under 21, so they were carrying illegally. It was illegal for them to carry in the Mall. One of them is believed to be the shooter who killed the 19 year old. It is possible another of them also fired a firearm, but all are suspects involved according to police.

There were 16 police officers on duty in the Mall. Despite that all of the suspects left the Mall without being arrested, and went to White Castle to eat.

Compare that the the Greenwood Mall shooting. Where state law does not give the No Weapons signs legal force, and an attempted mass shooting was stopped by a concealed carry holder.

Greenwood Park Mall

The Greenwood Park Mall shooting occurred in the state of Indiana. Specifically, at the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana, a suburb located just south of Indianapolis .(Wikipedia)

During the incident, a gunman opened fire in the mall’s food court, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others. The shooter was subsequently fatally shot by Elisjsha Dicken, a 22-year-old legally armed civilian who was present at the scene .(Axios, Wikipedia)

The swift intervention by Dicken was widely recognized and praised by local and state officials for preventing further casualties .

My Thoughts

“These incidents make one thing clear: gun-free zones and restrictive carry laws may disarm the law-abiding, but they do little to stop those with criminal intent. Real safety comes not from signs and statutes alone, but from empowering responsible citizens to protect themselves and others when seconds count.”

In areas where civilians were legally permitted to carry firearms, the intervention rate by armed citizens was even higher. The CPRC found that in such locations, armed civilians stopped 51.5% of active shooter incidents, compared to 44.6% stopped by police.

Guns DO NOT Murder People: Criminals Do! Statistics on Violence, Gun Ownership, and Gun Control

Here are statistics on pool death compared to AR15 mass shooting deaths that Tom Grieve was mentioning, that I found.

Pool Drowning Statistics

In the United States:

  • Annually, about 3,500 to 4,000 people die from drowning, averaging around 10 fatal drownings per day.
  • Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children aged 1 to 4 years.
  • Between 2019 and 2021, there was an average of 358 pool- or spa-related fatal drownings for children under 15 years of age, with 75% of these victims being younger than 5 years old.
  • On average, from 2020 through 2022, there were an estimated 6,300 nonfatal pool- or spa-related drowning injuries treated in emergency departments each year for children under 15.

Mass Shooting Statistics

In the United States:

  • In 2023, there were 647 mass shootings, defined as incidents where four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.
  • In 2022, there were 645 mass shootings.
  • The number of fatalities in mass shootings in 2022 was 636, with 2,912 people injured.
  • Children and teenagers (ages 0-17) were victims in about 5% of these incidents

Comparison

  • The annual number of drowning deaths (3,500 to 4,000) is higher than the total number of fatalities from mass shootings (636 in 2022).
  • Mass shootings, however, have a significant psychological and social impact, often drawing extensive media attention and prompting discussions on gun control and public safety.
  • Both issues highlight the need for preventive measures—water safety education and supervision to prevent drownings, and policy and community interventions to reduce mass shootings.

Post Tennessee shooting , 152 rounds fired

ar15

I have been reading and listening to reporters, law enforcement, and individuals about demanding a band on AR 15 “Assault Rifles”. First, let me make it clear that these rifles are not Assualt Rifles, They did not have auto-select for rapid firing. you had to pull the trigger individually for each round fired.

You can fire that many rounds from a lot of firearms that have magazines, from pistols to rifles with small to larger-capacity magazine clips.

Nothing has been told about how many magazine clips were found at the site and what capacity they were, just that 152 rounds were fired. Neither were we told if the AR15 had been modified for auto-select firing.

There are illegal modification kits out there for rifles to pistols that can give these weapons this option. Some of them are even being made on 3D printers.

I am sure if the AR15 was bought at a retail gun store it did not come with Auto Select for rapid firing. Any weapon with that capability requires special licensing to own one and is mostly reserved for collectors. So not just anyone can get them.

So, was it modified or not?

If not, then almost any weapon with a magazine could be modified. Then the problem is not with the AR15s or pistols it is with the illegal modification kits that are being made that need to be addressed.

We have not been told what was in the manifesto, telling us the reason why it was done either.
